Department V
Welcome to The Observatory. Whether you intentionally applied to study here or simply followed an unfortunate chain of distinctions is now largely irrelevant.
The Observatory is both a research institute and a living world. Students do not merely study theories — they study the emergence of structure itself.
There are no examinations based on memorisation.
Students are evaluated by their ability to observe, compare, explain and construct coherent structural arguments supported by evidence from the simulator.
The faculty encourages disagreement.
Reality occasionally does the same.

Student Handbook — Seventh Edition (2026)
The Observatory Handbook is published here, with a full table of contents.
Unlike a traditional student handbook, it is not primarily about university regulations.
It is the official reference manual for The Observatory itself.
The handbook explains every major system in the simulator, including:
Its purpose is to help visitors understand exactly what they are seeing while using theobservatory.se.
As the simulator evolves, the handbook will evolve alongside it.

B.Sc.
Three years.
Students learn the foundations of:
M.Sc.
Advanced studies of:
Graduates are expected to design and conduct their own structural experiments.
Ph.D.
Independent research supervised by the faculty.
Doctoral dissertations are expected to produce new structural theory rather than merely apply existing models.
The Institute reserves the right to disagree with successful results until they have been reproduced.
III
S.I
The foundations of distinction, recursion and emergence.
S.II
Controlled interventions.
Uncontrolled consequences.
S.III
Dedicated to understanding why clocks routinely disagree with one another.
Attendance is mandatory.
Whether you have already attended remains an open research question.
S.IV
Directed by Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger.
Research areas include:
Students are reminded that observing an experiment may influence both the experiment and the observer.
Schrödinger has repeatedly confirmed that no cats are harmed during laboratory exercises.
Professor Heisenberg was unfortunately unavailable to verify their exact location.
IV
C.01
Everything begins with a distinction.
Probably.
C.02
How possibilities emerge before becoming history.
C.03
Why some selections reshape the world while others quietly disappear.
C.04
Chronological time measures duration.
Structural time measures change.
The difference is larger than most calendars are prepared to admit.
C.05
How structures remember without possessing memory.
C.06
Taught by Data.
Topics include:
Data maintains that probability distributions are beautiful.
Very few students disagree after the second lecture.
C.07
A core second-year course.
Students investigate:
Laboratory sessions involve controlled exposure to severely congested worlds.
Respiratory protection is unnecessary.
Conceptual protection is strongly recommended.
C.08
Elective.
Widely considered essential.
Topics include:
Final examination:
Construct a structurally polluted civilisation without using randomness.
Students who succeed are generally recruited by large organisations before graduation.
C.09
Control worlds.
Experimental worlds.
And why neither behaves as expected.
C.10
Taught by The Historian.
History reconstructed from structural evidence rather than chronology.
Students are discouraged from asking which version is the true one.

Data
Attendance has been statistically identical for the last seven years.
Data appears delighted every single time.
The System Theorist
Observer
No consensus has yet emerged regarding whether the lecture succeeds.

The Authors
VI
Every student receives their first distinction during orientation.
Whether they notice it is considered part of the examination.
Every graduate leaves behind at least one distinction that future students unknowingly inherit.
No one knows who started this tradition.
Der Archivar insists someone does.
He simply refuses to reveal who.
VII
Ab una distinctione omnia
The unofficial student version reads
If reality disagrees with your model, collect more observations before blaming reality.
